Current Line-up

LEATH POWELL - vocals

A rock linguist of some repute, Powell brings his lungs back to the band for another trip up the main-trunk-line of rock and roll.

STEVE MORRISON - guitars, keyboards, vocals

Increasing body hair and procreational duties have not stopped Steve from finding time to twiddle his twanger for the band.

MAT PATON - guitars

After many years filling in on bass, Mat now gets a chance to return full time to playing the guitar - his one true love.

BRENT WEAVERS - bass guitar

Brent has been playing in bands around Wellington for a long, long time. We're very excited about having him on board as part of the most solid rhythm section the band has even had.

ANDY MCPARTLIN - drums

Where would we be without the long suffering Andy? He's very tight, works hard, knows the songs well, and we like him a lot.

GREG ROGAN - flute, sax, recorder, EWI

Greg is the king of wind, and lends his fantastic woodwind playing skills to Great Uncle Pete. Also look out for his electronic wind instrument adding a new dimention to the sound.

Complete list of band members

Great Uncle Pete has had more line-up changes than Deep Purple, however we like to live by the philosophy: Once a member of Great Uncle Pete, always a member of Great Uncle Pete. And further more, it doesn't take much to become a member, you only have to jam with us once. Some of these people have made bigger and longer contributions than others, but we love them all - though some of the instruments we'd rather forget.

Andrew McPartlin drums Current drummer. Best drummer.
Andrew Shepherd flute, management Andrew is from the very early days of the band. He was reluctant to do flute solos, but keen to be manager.
Andrew Walker drums Played drums for the "The Band Now Out-Numbers The Audience 2 to 1" concert.
Brent Weavers bass Current bass player. Sounds just like the real thing.
Bronwyn Babbage vocals, panpipes, ukulele Came on June 31st Tours prior to child bearing days. Wrote the playout for the Overlocker song (much to Leath's anoyance)
Colin Marshall acoustic guitar, vocals, drums, jews harp, nudity Another keen June 31st-er. With Steve and The Doctor, Colin formed part of the break-away faction of the band calling themselves "The Talking Donkeys", whose only song "Syndrome" he helped to write. Colin is a big fan of the Pete classic "Now I'm Blue"
Daniel Vincent bass Played bass once at a Kmart gig.
David Shepherd bass Played bass for a recording we did (which I don't have!) - possibly prior to us becomming a real rock band.
Dr Duncan Babbage vocals, trumpet, trumpophone, husqvarnaphone, song writing The keenest June 31st-er of them all. A huge supporter of the band, the only black mark being when he turned one of his J31 robes into a Star Trek costume for a fancy dress party.
Grace Wright trombone Trombone player for a long time. You should have seen some of the trombone parts Leath wrote out - classic stuff.
Greg Rogan flute, saxophone, recorder, EWI Current member. Exceptional jazz musician. Knows all the tricks.
Hamish Stevenson trumpet, bwow bwow keyboards Leath hated the keyboard sounds Hamish made, but Steve really liked them and wished we'd used them more often. This caused a bit of friction between Steve and Leath. Steve often tried to get further keyboard players to imitate the sound (while Leath wasn't listening), but no one could do it like Hamish did.
Hamish Wood keyboards, piano, violin, marinucci, ferenalli (player/murderer) Always reluctant to show off on the keys, but is a fantastic player. Murdered the Ferenalli.
James Edgecombe vocals James "Great Uncle Pete will only sing ONE song" Edgecombe. Did some bv's on a recording once. We always meant to get him to play violin on something, but so far we haven't found an appropriate situation.
Karl Udy percussion, harmonica Can't remember Karl playing with us. Probably a one off gig somewhere. Was always very supportive of the band.
Kelvin Lewis drums Played for one recording (the one with David Shepherd - see above)
Kent Humphrey acoustic guitar Joined us for a June 31st tour in 1995 and played some very nice acoustic guitar.
Leath Powell vocals, accordion, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, kazoo, maracas, marinucci, piano, song writing Who is this guy? I can't remember him. Oh well, moving along....
Mark Edgecombe trombone, vocals Mark was always good to join us on stage at a gig. Still would.
Mathew Paton bass, acoustic and electric guitars Ah, Paton. Musical genious.
Michael Thomas drums First real replacement for Ryan as a rock drummer, when GUP went back to playing rock. Stayed with us for a long time until the band split up and lost contact.
Rob Edgecombe bass Replaced Mat the first time Mat left. Big claim to fame was arranging the bass part for two bars in the chorus of Ambulance Man that all future bass players have been forced to play.
Ryan Overend drums, vocals, car horn, song writing Original band member. All round good guy.
Simon Johnson bass, vocals, acoustic guitar, song writing Original band member, along with Steve and Ryan. Gave GUP bass groove that has stayed with them right through. Steve thinks the GUP "sound" is largly to do with what the bass is doing. That's why it has always been important to find the right bass players. We have Si to thank for setting that sound up for us.
Steve Morrison acoustic and electric guitars, vocals, piano, bass, percussion, marinucci, sequencing, arranging, song writing The only guy who has gone right through with the band.
Tim Barlow saxophone, wild druming, piano, bass, sound engineer, self professed saviour of the band Still trying to save the band and make them famous. Tim is a very useful person to have around. He's helped us out playing many different instruments - usually filling in for whoever in the band was missing.
Tim Dewar trombone Trombone for at least one gig - maybe more.
Tim Gillon electric 5 string bass, fret-less electric bass, double bass Bass player with GUP at Rob's 21st. Used a different bass for each of the three songs we did. He's a fantastic bass player, but was never in Wellington enough to become a full time member of the band.

If you are a previous member of Great Uncle Pete with whom I have lost contact (and to be honest there are quite a few), please contact me. Details on the contacts page.
